Sony KDL-40W4000 – 40 “LCD TV: test and review

Proposed less than 1400 euros, Sony LCD TV is one of the most richly endowed in its class. It embeds LCD Full HD panel last generation (S-PVA technology) based on video processing and 10-bit version of the BRAVIA Engine 2. There is also a compatible tuner HD, a way of strengthening contrasts (technology “ACE” for Advanced Contrast Enhancer), the Live Colour dear Creation to the Japanese manufacturer, adjustable backlight, a new user interface (based on that PS3 and PSP) and the famous modes “Photo TV HD” and “Custom Image” for transforming the screen into luxury digital photo frame thanks to its USB port. Do not forget connectivity, including three HDMI 1.3 including inputs and a PC input. The many functions of control and comfort are there to facilitate use of the 40W4000. In short, everything has been planned for this TV a true HD multimedia hub.

Thanks to the Xross Media Bar interface, navigation is easier and with more fluidity. however careful calibration of the image, by default all parameters are pushed to the bottom and the image saturates all sides. Result: it’s ugly. By bringing the different parameters of the measured values, it goes back a few natural skin tones appear with more credibility and colors are no longer overdose. In terms of definition, the screen is relatively “small” (you get used to everything, even to 40 inches), the image offers a convincing dive on SD sources. As soon as there is movement, it gets stuck a bit, but the outlines are still almost clear. The colors are manageable and can be hyper dynamic. A very good point. The clay courts of Roland Garros with a tendency to turn to bright orange if we do not control these settings. Side contrasts, it’s also pretty conclusive even if the famous developer ACE tends to generate noise. Difficult to get true black, intense, even playing with the graduations of the backlight. Despite all the qualities of this new generation of LCD, Plasma technology still has an edge in terms of depth of black, fluidity and color heat.

With Blu-ray, this KDL-40W4000 shows explosive. A definition of hell, firm colors, fine and supported contrasts, no trace of lag, a good fluidity, the image is superb.

A beautiful image SD, superb HD image, a nice user interface, a myriad of optimization modes and comfort functions, full connectivity, multimedia opening, admittedly limited but interesting reserved access to Freeview HD when it will start.
