The cameras are really tiny

The electronic and computer products outside the strict framework of technology to venture into the fashion. Flagrant with iPods and their little white earbuds so “trendy”, the phenomenon is also present in the world of digital photography. The review of the technical criteria is not enough to separate the devices. Manufacturers then provide special care to the line and the dress of their products. The range that benefits most is undoubtedly that of ultracompact.

Alongside the classic criteria such as resolution, the zoom power or type of embedded memory card, a camera can choose as a fashion accessory. In our view the μ-mini Digital Olympus is best able to take on this role. Its multiple colors: orange, red, blue, white, black and gray, and its rounded wonders. Its design is successful. To hold otherwise would be disingenuous. Unfortunately photographic performance is not up to the plumage and proved disappointing. Making it an apparatus to less fussy about the quality of images.

Other manufacturers are more traditional with rectangular or square shaped devices sporting a silver gray classic but very elegant. For the latter, the performance still play their part. The first regarded feature, although this is not always the most relevant, remains the resolution of the sensor. If one seeks a 5 megapixel, the Pentax Optio S5i that is required. Then, in descending order, we have the Canon Digital Ixus 40-4 megapixels and the Casio Exilim EX-S100 3.3 megapixels.

Both devices stand out by the technology used by their characteristics or on the margins of current production. This is the case of the Dimage X50 Konica Minolta and Pentax Optio 33WR. The first because it overcomes the protruding zoom when it is on. The manufacturer has chosen to integrate the vertical mechanism. The X50 is thus a device that remains completely flat in all circumstances, regardless of the selected zoom factor. For the second is its off-road capabilities that distinguish it. Waterproof to withstand immersion thirty minutes under a meter of water, it can be used in generally hostile to technology environments (dust, sand, humidity). It will be the darling of fighters.

Finally, if the image quality is your main criterion. Our tests put these devices in the following order: Konica Minolta X50, the Casio Exilim EX-S100, Canon Digital Ixus 40, the Pentax Optio 33WR, the Pentax Optio S5i and the Olympus μ-mini Digital.
